삼성물산과 제일모직 합병 건에서 삼성 편을 든 국민연금이 막대한 손실을 기록하고 있어 국민의 노후저축에 손실을 끼치고 있다는 원망을 받고 있다. '합병에 반대하라'는 국내외 의결권 자문기관의 권고를 무릅쓰고 합병에 찬성했지만, 합병 성사 후 연일 주가가 폭락해 3일만에 3361억원의 평가손실을 입었기 때문이다. 상황이 이렇게 되자 홍완선 국민연금관리공단 기금운용본부장은 자리마저 내놓을 위기에 처했다. 의결권위원회 관계자는 "삼성물산 합병 건과 관련해 국민연금 기금운용본부가 왜 (의결권위원회에) 심의를 요청하지 않았는지에 대한 절차적인 사항에 대해 논의했다"고 말했다.
